The goal

The aim was to gather and analyze feedback on the usability of the company's digital tools and propose improvements to enhance their user experience

Contestants

We formed two teams of experts

Each member represented a role typically involved in the real-life process of designing and executing a building, including:

  • Project Manager

  • 3 Designers

  • Cost Analyst

  • Structural Engineer

Tasks

Day 1: Design Phase of the Project

  • Create a 3D model of a residential building

  • Estimate project costs

  • Generate a catalog of residential units with measurements

  • Prepare an environmental impact assessment

Day 2: Build Phase of the Project

  • Refine or adjust the 3D model of the residential building

  • Re-estimate costs based on construction details

  • Update the catalog of residential units if needed

  • Finalize the environmental impact information

Research goals

Tangibles

  • Measure modeling time

  • Assess model quality

  • Determine the level of support users need

Intangibles

  • Identify problems that arise while using the typology tool and how they are resolved

  • Pinpoint the main user pain points and what they are most satisfied with

  • Understand how users evaluate their experience with the typology tool

Feedback sessions

After each day we organized a feedback session to learn what are the user’s main observations

  • Individual ID interviews

  • Group discussion

Ux analysis

After the hackathon, we dedicated significant time to analyzing the feedback we gathered.

  • We created a user journey diagram

  • identified the main user pain points

  • Constructed an affinity diagram to group similar problems into categories

Research impact

During the hackathon, we validated some hypotheses and discovered many new challenges we hadn't previously recognized.

The insights we gathered helped us identify the key problems to focus on, kicking off the ideation process to find solutions.
